Chemistry AS / A2

Chemistry A Level is the study of materials and their properties. It covers all aspects of the subject, focussing on the three main areas of Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. The course is designed to stimulate and sustain interest in Chemistry by presenting it in a variety of situations, many of them involving practical work.

The new courses in post 16 Chemistry place an emphasis on 'How Science Works' and the role chemistry plays in a modern society. Study is made of contemporary topics such as Climate Change, Pharmaceuticals and Medicines Research, Green Chemistry and New Polymer Materials.

Students need a firm academic grounding to succeed at AS and/or A level Chemistry. They should have obtained a grade B or better in GCSE Additional Science. Alternatively those taking the Triple Science route should have attained a grade B or better in GCSE Chemistry and at least C’s in Biology and Physics. A C grade or better in Maths GCSE is also a requirement. They should have enjoyed Chemistry at GCSE and be willing to bring an enquiring mind to the study of a fascinating subject.

The course is appropriate for those whose study of Chemistry will stop at the end of Year 12 or Year 13, but is a secure foundation for those who may wish to continue their studies in this or related subjects.

What could this course lead to?

The course is essential for anyone wishing to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science. It is also required for most other sciences and applied sciences, particularly those involving Chemistry or Biology. It is also required for Earth Sciences and goes well with Geography, Technology and Mathematics.
