Part of what makes QE so special is the friendly atmosphere - even OFSTED agree! This is in large measure down to the mainly excellent relationships between staff and students. This in turn is greatly helped by the fact that our teachers get to know children very well through our Pastoral system. This is based on Year Team Leaders and a team of Personal Mentors. We try to ensure that this team stays together for the whole of our students’ journey through the school.
Great care is taken in placing students together in a registration group, so that there is a balance of interests and abilities. The registration group remains the teaching group for most lessons in Years 7 and 8 and is the focus for sporting and cultural activities throughout the College. Each registration group will have two Personal Mentors. The Personal Mentor gets to know their group of students very well and monitors and records achievement in every area of school life. They also link with the home and meet parents at the Parents Consultation events.
The Pastoral curriculum is delivered through subjects, assemblies, special events and residential experiences. Again, we are very keen to use the pastoral curriculum to actively teach the Skills for Success.
As well as the Year Teams we also support students by providing a trained Counsellor working across both sites to provide opportunities for confidential talks with students and sometimes their parents. We also have Behaviour Support Managers to work with students who are having difficulties learning in the classroom environment. Health education advice is offered by our two School Nurses, who are also site based.
