Our programme in years 7 and 8 has recently been revised and updated to include all of the requirements of the new KS3 framework. The programme that we follow is called Mathslinks. The structure of our curriculum is designed around the Mathslinks course. 

As the name suggests, the learning is embedded by making clear links between the maths topics being learnt and the real world. These links are in evidence in every single lesson in the programme. Additionally the course links in with other learning areas and shows how the maths is used. 

Finally the course highlights links within other areas of maths itself and shows which skills will be needed (and how) at later stages. This linking on 3 levels supports students in their ability to reflect upon their learning and to make connections with things that they have learned in maths and other subject areas. The clear contextualisation of concepts enhances the learning experience and enthuses students toward being able to connect their learning in different subject areas.

We allow students to commence their GCSE studies in year 9. The timespan of 3 years allows more flexibility for students. This approach means that students have more preparation time, and potentially much less pressure during the crucial year 11 phase. Students are supported throughout by numerous features within the maths department. “Mathscafe” operates on a daily basis at upper school, and allows students to meet at lunch times and discuss work with maths teachers. It is also an opportunity for students to socialise in a calm environment with refreshments available.
