Modern Foreign Languages

At QE we believe that our students are entitled to experience the language and culture of at least one European country; we recognise the importance of preparing them to live and work in a world where countries are linked by trade and tourism and we seek to equip them with the skills to become adaptable and independent learners, able to learn other languages which may be needed in the future. We encourage our students to visit the countries which they are studying by running study visits and Enrichment Week trips; there is also the chance to form links with French, German and Spanish young people through penfriendships  e- mail and video linking.

NEWS UPDATE

Monday 26th was European Day of Languages and the MFL department had lots going on! The day aims to raise awareness of the different languages spoken in Europe and world-wide and expand the pupils’ knowledge of foreign languages. We all enjoyed the day and are looking forward to next year! There was European food in the school canteen all week, foreign language activities took place at lunchtime and a French film was shown in the evening for pupils, staff and parents. What’s more, many pupils at QE got a taste of a different European language during their language lesson and as part of our ‘Language Carousel’ Pupils learnt Catalan, Polish, Creole, Danish, Greek and German. All day, pupils were greeted by their subject teachers in a foreign language. Many students took part in the European Day of Languages Quiz and we can now announce the winners, who will be given their prizes after half term!

On the 22nd September and as part of European Week of Languages, Madame Manning took 15 QE students to take part in a French Day at w:st="on"Exeter University.  The task for the day was to create an advertisement for the Gourmandine Café in w:st="on"Exeter using cutting edge multi-media equipment.  The event was organised by Bertie Cozic (founder of Gourmandine) the former w:st="on"Exeter football player, who then turned his passion to crêpes.

Two teams from QE worked throughout the day to produce their advertisements. Joanna McLaren was one of the QE team members ”We decided to do an interview with Bertie himself- in French and in English.  The interview went very well and it was very interesting to hear how and why he decided to open the Gourmandine café.  Also, it was a great opportunity to ask him about France, and I personally was very inspired to go there”

The day was a great success and the team that designed the most popular advert won an ipod touch for their school!
