The education of our students is undoubtedly a major focus for Boarding, and we work hard to ensure the links to school are well maintained and fine-tuned. The flow of information and the routine and regular contact between staff ensures a privileged and enviable position in comparison to most families in standard arrangements. We are perfectly placed to support each and every boarder in their academic pursuits, and to enable them to excel in other aspects of school life.
We aim to ensure students can make the most of the extra curricular events and opportunities equally vital to their all round development, growth and happiness. Participation with their peers in a wide range of activities can help enrich their lives, present additional challenges and expand their sense of identity.
"Boarding practices foster a sense of responsibility for learning and education. Teaching and boarding staff work together to monitor students' achievement and provide support for homework" - Ofsted 2012
In addition, we believe our role is to help our students understand the relevance of the learning they are experiencing and guide them in their application of the knowledge and skills being acquired. The direction their life takes is strongly influenced by their ability to make the right choices at the right time. Whilst often required to become an advocate on their behalf, we promote personal control and responsibility. It is essential we both model and ackonwledge multiple intelligences, strive to bring vibrancy to learning, and embrace youthful exuberance as part of this adventurous approach.
It is important to highlight the role of our duty teachers who not only monitor and support the routine prep sessions, but also hold informal drop-ins primarily aimed at senior students. This enables students to get personal guidance to support their general study and in addition benefit their preparation for life after school, whether it involves further eduation, training or employment.
Prep - Monday-Friday, 18:00-19:00, Years 7-11 (Mandatory)
Drop-ins - Monday-Thursday, 21:00-22:30, All students (Optional)
Specifically when it comes to academic matters the school link officer will liaise with all teachers, mentors and TA's regarding Boarders' academic progress. The school link officer then liaises with the duty teachers to ensure all prep and independant learning sessions are targeted to benefit each individual Boarder.
