Inaugural Success for B.S.A

The Boarding Skills Award has come to an end for the school year 2011-2012, and many of our boarders have achieved certificates in the Basic and Standard Award. One of our sixth formers, Alice Fuhrmann, has achieved the Higher Award, the first student in the United Kingdom to do so. A massive congratulations to her for this achievement!

The Skills Award was created to evidence the soft skills learnt by students in a Boarding community that employers will use as a currency for employability alongside academic results in a more competitive market. There are 4 levels - Basic, Standard, Advanced and Higher, so that boarders from Years 7-13, can access these awards. There are many skills generated by the award, with just some of these being diversity, valuing others, managing emotions and stress, leadership, adaptability and listening skills. It is expected that boarders have a lot of fun as they work through the challenges in each award, but that they will also learn to be critically reflective about themselves and the community that they live in.

An awards ceremony took place on Tuesday 17th July, with Mrs Grimes presenting these students with their awards.

Basic: Gordon Wong, Pepe Alvarez-Ossorio, Allen Wong, Toby Pun, Charlie Chau, Michael Chan, Ray Suen, Zoe Cheng, Marco Leung

Standard: Brian Cheung

Higher: Alice Fuhrmann

Governors Informal Visit

Over recent weeks we have had the opportunity to welcome pairs of Governors in Boarding as part of an initiative to raise their awareness of the Boarding Community and to give Boarders the chance to meet them.

The visits seem to be going well, generally starting with an evening meal, observation of prep, followed by a guided tour of the buildings and the chance for exchange of questions and information. Governor Maxine Tucker responded by saying" I found the whole visit really interesting and Boarding is no longer a mystery to me. The students were lovely - I loved the atmosphere - it really did feel like a big family. I will be singing your praises whenever I get the opportunity."
