Our History
Queen Elizabeth’s has been serving the people of Devon for four hundred and sixty odd years, originally as a Grammar School, then as a boarding Grammar for Boys and Girls, now as the only state school in Devon with boarding. Since April 2011 we have been an academy, which means we are an independent state school directly funded by government and in control of our own destiny.
This is a college proud of its history, but also with a strong sense of its future as an innovatory and ground breaking school dedicated to enabling all our young people to become happy, well rounded and successful adults.
We have approximately 1540 young people and over 260 adult employees and stand at the heart of a thriving educational community that includes thirteen partner primary schools spread across hundreds of square miles of rolling Devon countryside. Our schools together form the Crediton Learning Community. The Learning Community exists to make sure we give the best possible education to the children who live in our area, right through primary and secondary education to university and beyond.
Location
The College is located on two sites. The Barnfield site has beautiful grounds and views right across the hills to Dartmoor. This houses Years 7 and 8 away from the rest of the school and allows the younger students to find their feet in the very different world of secondary education in a calm and friendly atmosphere tailored to their needs.
The Western Road site covers a large area at the western end of Crediton and includes the ancient and familiar façade of College House, the old boys’ grammar school. This is now our Sixth Form Centre which has been extensively refurbished over the past few years with a new
Library, re-furbished rooms and a new
Sixth Form Cafe. We have also just taken possession of a new 8 classroom Humanities block to accommodate the burgeoning numbers choosing to join our outstanding Sixth Form. Our two boarding houses are also located here.
Curriculum
We offer the full range of subjects and are particularly strong in the Sports and Arts areas. This is evident in our achieving Sportsmark with Distinction and Artsmark Silver in recognition of the excellence of our provision in these areas. Indeed, we believe that the extra-curricular opportunities offered to our young people in the sports and arts are second to none in Devon.
We believe that schools are about people. We aim to get the absolute best out of all the people we work with - staff and students - by focusing on the quality of the learning experience we provide and always looking for ways to improve it. But we also aim to have fun and enjoy what we do - visitors always comment on the great atmosphere and the good relationships we have with one another.
Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs
We are also a very inclusive College. We invest a huge amount in our Learning Support Service which includes a very successful Specific Learning Difficulties Centre which deals with students with dyslexia from all over the county. We pull out all the stops to help all our students, whatever their ability, physical or intellectual. We are particularly proud of the achievements of our students who have had to struggle against the odds.
We are determined to give all our students access to the latest technology and to help them become true digital natives of the 21st Century. We have one of the largest networks in Devon, with a mixture of ICT suites, laptops, electronic whiteboards and handheld devices covering Mac as well as PC operating systems.
Teaching School Alliance
We are also part of the
South West Teaching Schools Alliance. This means that alongside our partners, we are helping to create the next generation of teachers and teaching assistants. Your children will benefit from the sharp focus it brings to our skills as teachers and the new ideas and fresh approaches that new entrants bring with them. Indeed we have found this to be a great way to recruit and retain the best of some astonishingly gifted young teachers.
We believe that learning should be an inspiring and enjoyable experience for both students and teachers. We see ourselves as equipping our young people with the skills they will need to be happy and successful adults and that means much more than just success with exams. We want to educate students to have real skills and understanding which will stay with them for life, not just while they are in the exam room.
We also believe that however good we are, and we intend to be the best, we can always find ways to improve. Our students and their parents are key to us knowing how well we are doing. To this end, we are very keen to involve you as full and active partners in the education of your children.
We hope that the following pages will inspire you to want to join us.
